Amid the efforts by Sangh Parivar to bring in various Hindu outfits in Kerala into its fold, a body of state's influential Hindu Nair community on Friday accused a section of BJP leaders of trying to intimidate it and interfere in its affairs.  "Nobody needs to intimidate the NSS by thumping on broad chest....Those who are clad in saffron need not entertain any illusion that NSS could be wrapped in saffron," Nair Service Society (NSS) General Secretary G Sukumaran Nair said.

Speaking at the inaugural function of the 139th birthday of its founder and social reformer Mannath Padmanabhan at Perunna in Changanassery near here, he said NSS would help those parties which approach it with all humility.

His statement assumes significance in wake of BJP trying to woo various Hindu outfits in the state to back it ahead of Assembly polls scheduled early this year. The saffron party has successfully reached out to the leadership of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) headed by Vellappally Natesan. Natesan, who floated a new party 'Bharat Dharma Jana Sena' last month by organising various Hindu caste organisations in Kerala, had invited NSS to associate with it. But NSS outrightly rejected the Eazhava community leader's invitation, saying it could not be made party to "somebody's selfish move".

Addressing NSS leaders today, Nair asked the BJP leaders to "control" those in the party leadership who try to target the NSS for political purposes. "BJP should not try to interfere in the internal matters of NSS," Nair said and asked the BJP leaders to learn from Congress-led UDF and the CPI (M)-led LDF in this regard. "NSS does not side with any political party. BJP leaders should learn about NSS," he said, adding that it was only a small section of BJP leaders see NSS as an enemy.

He was apparently referring to a section of BJP members belonging to the Nair community and opposed to his leadership trying to capture NSS Karayogams (village level units). Some karayogams, in which BJP members are in majority, had even passed resolutions against his leadership on various issues.
