Under pressure, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday announced to enact a new law to make rape of minors punishable by death.

"We will never ever let another child suffer in this way. We will bring a new law that will make the death penalty mandatory for those who rape minors, so that little girl’s case becomes the last," Mehbooba tweeted.

Earlier Mehbooba promised that the law will not be obstructed by the irresponsible actions and statements of a group of people.

"Proper procedures are being followed, investigations are on the fast track & justice will be delivered”, Mehbooba tweeted.

The Chief Minister broke her silence after former chief minister and National Conference (NC) Omar Abdullah upped the ante and questioned Mehbooba for not sacking her two ministers who had joined the rally of Hindu Ekta Manch demanding CBI probe few months back

“Why? They aren’t his ministers; they are Mehbooba Mufti’s ministers. The power to sack them rests with her, a simple letter to His Excellency Governor is all it takes”, Omar tweeted

“What rubbish! They are HER ministers, not the Hon PM’s. The way for her to “express her displeasure” is to sack them in Jammu not come & leak her alleged displeasure in Delhi”, Omar added.

Last month Jammu and Kashmir Forest Minister Chaudhary Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga had joined the rally of Hindu Ekta Manch and supported their demand for CBI probe into the incident .

The issue also snowballed into a major controversy with three main parties - National Conference, Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) - slugging it out on the twitter.

“Why pass the buck on? The Chief Minister should sack them! Is she afraid of losing her chair?” tweeted Junaid Azim Mattu, state spokesman of NC

“Giving communal colour to this unfortunate incident won't bring justice to the victim. Jammu and Kashmir police is a highly decorated force of the country with President's honour of colour. J&K CM has ensured a fair probe from day one”, tweeted Rafi Ahmad Mir, chief spokesman of PDP.

Jammu and Kashmir Works Minister and chief spokesman of the coalition government Naeem Akhtar too joined in and hailed the stand taken by the chief minister.

“The principled stand taken by Mehbooba Mufti in this case from day one has ensured a fair and fast investigation by our able police team led by SP Vaid. Good that JKP is now hailed across the board and receiving moral support”, he tweeted.

Akhtar also took on Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his party’s decision to support Jammu bandh call given by the Bar Assocation of Jammu. “But Congress officially supported the Bandh call by Jammu Bar Association. Will you Rahul Gandhi sir officially withdraw the support to such crass divisive campaign. Otherwise it's just a jumla”, he said.
