Shock, anger and outrage gripped J&K after the governor administration appointed the counsel of one of the accused in Kathua rape and murder case, as Additional Advocate General.

Aseem Sawhney, who represents head constable Tilak Raj in the Kathua rape and murder case, was appointed additional advocate general of J&K. Sawhney is among the 16 lawyers who have been appointed senior additional advocate generals, additional advocate generals, deputy advocate generals and government advocates in the Jammu Wing of J&K High Court.

Talib Hussain, the face of the campaign for justice of the Kathua rape and murder, has decided to move the Supreme Court. "How can a counsel of the accused be made government advocate?" he asked.

Sawhney's appointment has taken a political turn, with both the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) denouncing the action. "It's ironic that a day after celebrating World Day for International Justice, the defence counsel in the horrific Kathua case has been appointed as Additional Advocate General, said Mehbooba Mufti, ex-CM.
