Kashmiri pandit's sweet gesture: Candies for Eid procession

There was a ray of hope for people in troubled south Kashmir on Friday, as it saw Kashmiryat (pluralistic cuslture) in full bloom. A Kashmiri pandit and his wife greeted the a procession of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (the Prophet's birthday) by distributing candies to the Muslims as a token of love.

Vimal and Shushma Tickoo surprised the procession that lined up on the route. Carrying a bag full of candies, the couple distributed toffees to pedestrians a a mark of respect.

"We are greeting them on the auspicious occasion. We are welcoming them. We do it every year", said Vimal.

Hailing from Mattan area of Anantnag, the couple came out to greet the procession in a traditional style. "They (Muslims) too join us when we celebrate our festivals. We have brotherhood in our area. There has been no problem in Mattan. They are our well wishers", said Shushma.

The couple's gesture stole the hearts of local Muslims. Young Muslims came forward to click selfies with the couple.

Even the video of the gesture has gone viral on social networking sites. The Director General of Police, Dr Shesh Paul Vaid, retweeted the video of the couple distributing candies to the people during the Milad procession.

Figures released by Kashmir Pandit Sangrash Simiti (KPSS), the apex body of non-migrant pandits, reveals that 677 Kashmiri pandits have been killed by the militants since 1990. The figures include mass massacres at different places. However, the state government figures reveal that only 219 Kashmiri pandits were killed in the state since 1989.

Official figures reveal that around 41,117 migrant families from Kashmir are registered in Jammu and 21,000 others in Delhi and other states. Of them, 37,128 are Hindus, 2,246 Muslims and 1,758 Sikhs.

Thousands marched through South Kashmir's Anantnag to celebrate the birthday of the last messenger of Allah. The south Kashmir district has been the epicentre of last year's unrest in the Valley.
