Kashmiri music set to resonate in United Kingdom

For the first time Kashmiri singers and traditional musicians will perform in London from September 7.

Forget Zubin Mehta concert, the famed Kashmiri musical orchestra is taking the world by storm.

For the first time the Kashmiri singers and traditional musicians will be performing in United Kingdom to popularise the art before a wide-stream of audience from September 7 to 24. Incidentally their first concert will be coinciding with Zubin Mehta show at Shalimar garden in Srinagar on September 7.

Led by well-known singer and music composer Waheed Jeelani, the five member group of musicians has been sponsored by the Jammu and Kashmir government to participate and represent the state in various cultural programmes and festivals across the United Kingdom.

“The highlight of the cultural fest will be the concert on UK’s one of the most viewed television channels DM Digital TV on September 9. The programme will be telecast live in more than 38 countries of Europe and America,” Jeelani told dna.

Jeelani is also expected to perform in a Charity Music Concert organised by Creative Scotland Arts Council on September 17. Plus, the group will be performing in a concert organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations London and Luton Cultural Festival. The troupe will also participate in the music concerts organised by Kashmir Bhavan Centre and Kashmiri Association of Great Britain London.

For the first time the artists playing traditional musical instruments will also be part of the troupe.  Kashmir’s known Sarangi Nawaz and folk singer Mohommad Abdullah Bhat Shakhsaz, Rabab player Ghulam Mohammad. Lone, Tabla and Tumbaknari player Imtiyaz Malik will be playing Kashmiri orchestra. Usha Khar, a Jammu based Kashmiri female vocalist, is another member of the troupe.

“The instrument player will play an exclusive Kashmiri orchestra in the concert. There will a jugalbandi of these artists in the concerts which will be followed by songs sung by me. Though I have been traveling abroad for the shows,  it will be first time that traditional musicians, who play different instruments, will also be showcasing their art before an international audience,” said Jeelani.

“Besides Kashmiri, some songs in Gojri, Pahari and Punjabi languages will also be sung in the show,” he added. 

The basic aim of the show is to take Kashmiri music to a wider audience and popularize the art before the diaspora.
