Kashmir unrest: Militants pretending to be protestors loot police post; 39 guns missing

Security forces have a new worry at hand as militants under the garb of protesters are attacking the law enforcing agencies deployed for tackling law and order problems in a bid to provoke rage and cause casualties in the valley. More than 39 guns have been looted by mob from a police station in south Kashmir.

For the third time in the last three days, militants attacked security forces taking advantage of the law and order situation in the valley on Tuesday. The latest incident took place in the apple-rich township of Sopore where militants fired at a police post in Warpora.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir range, Uttam Chand told dna that militants attacked the post while it was busy handling law and order.

“On one side there was stone pelting and on the other militants attacked our post. Since there has been no casualty in north Kashmir, militants it seems wanted to provoke a civilian casualty”, said Chand.

This is the third incident where militants, disguised as protesters, have attacked the security forces posse in Kashmir.  On Monday evening, militants lobbed a grenade on CRPF troopers who were deployed in Nowhatta area of old Srinagar city for law and order duties.

“Nine of our men were injured in the incident. They have been shifted to hospital for treatment”, said KK Sharma, deputy inspector general of CRPF.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, police cautioned the public, saying that it had been seen during situations of law and order, militants were firing and lobbing grenades at Police and CRPF personnel.

On Sunday, militants lobbed two grenades at the CRPF deployed for law and order duties in Murran Chowk of south Kashmir, resulting in injuries to some personnel. 

“A vehicle of SP Shopian was fired upon and a grenade was also lobbed. Militants also fired upon the Police Post Uttressu”, a police spokesman said.

Police sources said around 39 guns and a large quantity of ammunition was missing from a police station in South Kashmir after a mob torched its building and held 20 cops hostage at Damhal Hanjipora. 

The arms and ammunition that are missing include 21 INSAS rifles, 12 SLR rifles, two AK 47 rifles, one Light Machine Gun and three Carbine Machine Guns. Apart from this, 108 INSAS magazines, six Carbine Machine Gun magazines, 18 SLR magazines, one LMG magazine and five AK 47 magazines were still missing. 

Sensitive documents and wireless codes too have been missing since the mob attacked the police station. Efforts are on to trace the arms, ammunition and the documents.

"We are trying our best to blunt the tools of militants who are hell bent on creating trouble and provoke tension in the valley", said a senior police official.
