Kashmir singes as toll touches 47 after two more people die

When the protests seemed to be ebbing, another killing of a youth in the security forces firing post Friday prayers put the Kashmir Valley again on the brink.

The fresh killing in Awantipora-Kakpora came hours after another injured youth succumbed in the hospital taking the death toll to 47 since the unrest began after the killing of Hizbul Mujhadeen terrorist Burhan Muzaffar Wani on July 8.

The killing has come a day before the union home minister Rajnath Singh's visit here to defuse the tense situation in the Valley.

Things seems to be going well for the security forces as people preferred to stay indoors till afternoon. Tension however peaked after the Friday prayers when people took to streets raising pro freedom slogans at number of places.

Protesters clashed with the security forces after the Friday prayers rocked at Awantipora-Kakpora. Security forces opened fire in which two people sustained injuries. Mushtaq Ahmad later succumbed to his injuries at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital here.

"One person was brought dead to the hospital. He had a bullet injury in his abdomen. Two other injured persons – one from Pulwama and another from Sopore– have also been admitted. Doctors are examining them," Dr Nazir A Chaudhary, medical superintendent of SMHS hospital, told dna.

Earlier in the morning Ishtiyaq Ahmad, who had sustained injured in Kokernag area of Anantnag district on July 10, succumbed at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Thursday night.

Amid curfew and tight security, protests and stone pelting was reported from several places post Friday prayers in north, south and central Kashmir. Several people have suffered injuries in the security force action to quell the mobs.

Union home minister will visit the Valley on Saturday is scheduled to meet trade bodies, civil society groups and other stake holders to help in restoring peace in the restive Valley. PDP leaders hoped that the union home minister will announce some confidence building measures that could help in defusing the tension in the Kashmir Valley.

"The meeting is to take a note of the empathy and sense of solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir reflected during the debate on the prevailing situation in the State in both houses of the Parliament. The meeting calls for converting this political consensus into a national initiative for addressing the problems confronting Jammu and Kashmir and its people," the resolution said.
