Data released by the union ministry of home affairs (MHA) has revealed that over 40,961 people have been killed in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir from 1990 to March 31, 2017.
It is official, more than 40,000 people including 22000 militants and 5055 security forces men have been killed in the last 27 years of insurgency in strife-torn Jammu and Kashmir.
Data released by the union ministry of home affairs (MHA) has revealed that over 40,961 people have been killed in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir from 1990 to March 31, 2017.
In an RTI reply, chief public information officer of the union home ministry said 13491 civilians and 5055 security force personnel were killed in different terror attacks. Around 21,965 terrorists have also been neutralized by the security forces in the last 27 years. Nearly 13502 soldiers have also been injured while fighting with the terrorists.
The 2001 was the bloodiest year in the history of turmoil. Nearly 3552 people were killed which included 996 civilians, 536 security personnel and 2020 terrorists.
Around 1587 security force personals were injured in the year. The 1996 witnessed maximum number of civilian deaths in the last 27 years. Nearly 1341 civilians were killed in 1996 followed by 1031 civilians in 1995.
“After 2006, there has been a steep decline in the terror-related causalities till 2012. In year 2012, there were only 102 causalities that included 15 civilians, 15 security personnel and 72 terrorists, Nearly, 65 security men received injuries while fighting terrorists”, said Raman Sharma, RTI activist who had filed the application.
However, from 2013 onward there is a rise in the killings and in the terror related cases in the state. “Killings in 2016 were double than 2012. Around 247 people lost their lives in 2016 including 15 civilians, 82 security men and 150 terrorists. Till March 31 this year, 52 lives have been lost including five civilians, 12-armed force personnel and 35 terrorists”, he said.
Sharma said MHA has asked him to approach the state government for queries related to loss and damage of property in Jammu and Kashmir during the last 27 years
