Kashmir acid attack case: With culprits still at large after 6 days, IG seeks daily update on probe

Facing sharp criticism for inability to track down the assailants in the acid attack case last week, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Abdul Gani Mir today directed the special investigation team to brief him daily on the status of the case.

"The IGP sought a daily briefing from the investigators with regard to the progress and developments of the case," a police spokesman said after Mir chaired a meeting to review the investigations into the case. 

A 21-year-old law student suffered severe burn injuries after car-borne youth splashed acid on her face on December 11 at Nowshehra in city.

Despite police sounding an alert across the Valley, the assailants had allegedly tried to fly out of Kashmir from Srinagar airport but failed to do so due to unavailability of tickets that day. Various quarters including the family of the victim, who has been taken to Chennai for specialised treatment, are questioning the police functioning as the assailants are still at large after six days.

"The rapist cab driver in Delhi was tracked down within couple of days of the incident but our police is not able to arrest these criminals even after six days," an uncle of the victim told PTI over phone from Chennai. The police spokesman said the SIT has got several leads and investigators are working round the clock to work out the case as soon as possible.

"The IGP directed SIT that different teams which have fanned out in all directions should track down guilty at an earliest," the spokesman said. Mir emphasized that besides a professional requirement to nab the culprits, it's a challenge to our moral consciousness to eradicate this menace from our society.
