'Gaja Gamini', a film made in 2000 by M. F. Husain, in which Madhuri Dixit played the read role, could not pull crowds at the box office but was critically acclaimed widely, is being recreated with pictures. Inspired by the theme of the film and MF Husain, a young photographer and cinematographer from Kashi, Vinay Tripathi is shooting 'Gaja Gamini' all over again on the ghats and in the streets of Kashi.

What inspired him to recreate M. F. Husain's 'Gaja Gamini'?

Tripathi talking with iamin shared, “MF Hussain wanted to shoot his film in Kashi, but that dream remained unfulfilled. He had to get a special set built up in Mumbai. This compelled me to think how the movie would look if it was shot in real location in Kashi? This thought inspired me to recreate Gaja Gamini.”

The mysterious Gaja Gamini, the central figure of the film, appears as four characters, one of them being Sangeeta, a blind girl from Banaras, who inspires village women to revolt against a male-dominated system and carve a niche for women forever. However, Hussain couldn't go to Kashi around that time to shoot the film because of a protest going on against Deepa Mehta's film ‘Water.’

Tripathi says, “It took quite a lot of time for me thinking how to bring Gaja Gamini to the streets and ghats of Kashi. One day while browsing through Facebook I saw a picture of Yoga instructor Pushpanjali Sharma, and asked her whether she would be interested in portraying Gaja Gamini. She agreed to it.”

Tripathi's Photo-Gaja Gamini is based on women of different periods

“Hussain’s Gaja Gamini was based on women of different time periods. I am also filming it on the same line. In my film too, there will be five characters. Shooting for one of the characters was done in a market in Switzerland. Once Gajgamini’s shoot (Pushpanjali Sharma) is over, I will begin shooting for the rest of the characters.”

A woman's character can’t be judged by her face

Kashi's yoga guru and gym trainer, Pushpanjali, who is the lead character in Tripathi's Gaja Gamini, maintains, “The character of a woman can’t be judged by her face. A woman plays different characters in her life. She is a daughter, a sister, a wife, a sister-in-law, and it’s not the face that carries those relationships. As a symbolism to this philosophy, my face hasn’t been shown in this shoot. All my pictures are shot from the back. This theme of Tripathi's Photo-Gaja Gamini attracted me and so I agreed to portray the character without any hesitation.”

Tripathi says that he will first publish his Photo-Gaja Hamini on his FB timeline, and depending upon its popularity, it will be shown not only in Kashi but also in different parts of India and abroad.

He says, “We will seek comments and opinions from the public. All the five characters will have separate scripts that will be merged into one.”
