Kasganj violence: Main accused Salim arrested in connection with murder of Chandan Gupta

Four days after the clashes broke out on Republic Day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath finally broke his silence and instructed senior police officers to initiate strict action against those who indulged in the firing and violence in Kasganj.

The main accused in the case of one person's death in Kasganj Violence has been arrested from Kasganj. 22-year-old Chandan Gupta was killed in clashed following pelting of stones on a motorcycle rally which was taken out to celebrate Republic Day in Kasganj city of Western Uttar Pradesh. 

According to reports, Chandan Gupta was a student of B.Com and was also running a private organization named Sankalp which was involved in social activities.

Central intelligence agencies are closely tracking the activities of radical groups who are partaking in rumour and hate-mongering in the wake of the communal clashes in Kasganj. It is feared that the flare-up could spread to other parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Amid communal tension swelling and a lot of misinformation doing the rounds, the Union home ministry has asked the Uttar Pradesh government for a report on the Kasganj violence and the current situation, sources said. "The Home Ministry has asked the state government to send a comprehensive report about the violence that started last Friday and the steps taken to restore peace in Kasganj and its adjoining areas," said a government official.

Four days after the clashes broke out on Republic Day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath finally broke his silence and instructed senior police officers to initiate strict action against those who indulged in the firing and violence in Kasganj.

"Those spreading anarchy will not be spared. Strict action will be taken against those who indulged in violence," warned the chief minister, speaking to journalists in Gorakhpur.

Fearing attacks from rooftops on cops that are currently carrying out raids in Kasganj, the force used drones to carry out a surveillance of sensitive areas on Tuesday.

As the police teams walked through narrow lanes with houses separated by a few metres making it difficult to assess an attack, cops monitoring the images on the unarmed aerial vehicles (UAVs) gave them real-time information to the search patrols about the situation prompting them to go ahead.

On Tuesday, the police began search operations at around 3.30 pm in selective locations in the Baddu Nagar area where clashes have taken place. This is the area where the accused allegedly plotted Chandan Gupta's murder. Gupta was fired at from a rooftop. The main accused have been identified as Wasim, Saleem and Nasim. Police had earlier recovered weapons from their residence.

The police have been carrying door-to-door checks to identify rioters and also apprehended four during the search operations that were led by IG Aligarh Range, Dr Sanjeev Gupta and backed by RAF.
