Kasganj communal riots echoed in both Houses of the state Legislature on Friday with the Yogi Adityanath government turning down the opposition's demand for a judicial probe into the Republic Day clashes that left one dead and several injured.

Speaking in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, the Leader of Opposition Ram Govind Chaudhary alleged that the communal riots were part of a well-planned political conspiracy to target a particular community across the state. He said that he has three CDs of the violence to prove the charge.

"Shops and religious places of one particular community were put on fire by the VHP and Bajrang Dal activists during the violence while the police remained a mute spectator to their vandalism," he said. He also said, "Majority of those arrested belonged to that minority community... Fake cases have been slapped against them and their houses were searched without any search warrants," he said.

Members of the Samajwadi Party, BSP and the Congress disrupted proceedings in both Houses over the issue leading to several adjournments. They had demanded for a judicial probe into the Kasganj violence. The Yogi government, however, turned down the demand.

State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna refuted the opposition's charge saying that the police acted swiftly to control the violence in Kasganj.

"Since Special Investigation Team is investigating the case, there is no need for any other probe. Many accused have already been arrested. The opposition was trying to breach peace and communal harmony by making false claims," he said.
