Three MBBS interns decided to go for a swim on Friday in a canal near Hulivana village, near Mandya. Unfortunately, the strong currents washed them away and they could not be saved.

The New Indian Express reports that the three students are Shruti and Jeevan from Bengaluru and Girish from Tumakuru. Reportedly, five students who had just finished their MBBS exams at Mandya Medical College had started their internship at Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Keragodu.

They were given a send-off by the hospital and after the celebration five of them decided to go for a quick swim in the canal. This canal is close to the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway adds the report.

At around 4.30 pm, all of them went into the water near the highway but around 5.30 pm villagers heard them screaming and rushed to find out what was happening. The daily adds that four of the students were pulled out by the villagers but Shruti had already died and Jeevan died on the way to the hospital. They are yet to trace the body of Girish.

The police have stated that the doctors were either unaware of the how strong the currents were or did not know how to swim. They are still searching for Girish's body.
