The state has recorded a good number in the national tiger census report.

Karnataka has always had the highest number of tigers in the country but now it has 406! Karantaka's steps towards tiger conservation seem to be working well.
The census report was released by the Wildlife Institute of India giving the tiger count. A leading daily states that the report omitted protected areas like Male Mahadeshwara (MM Hills) Wildlife Sanctuary and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary which were traditionally seen as having no tiger population.
However, a scientific analysis of 1,933 sq km was done through camera-trapping has shown that there were a healthy number of tigers Male Mahadeshwara (MM Hills) Wildlife Sanctuary and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary. They have found 12 tigers in MM Hills and two at Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.
Wildlife biologist Sanjay Gubbi, key author of the study conducted by the Nature Conservation Foundation, has told a leading daily that there is a possibility that the number could double in the next five years in these areas.
Karnataka minister for cooperation and sugar HS Mahadeva Prasad released this study and has said they will look into the proposal of whether to declare these regions as a new tiger reserve.
