With the policemen attending duty on Saturday across Karnataka, the much publicised and anticipated plan of policemen applying for leave en masse has fizzled out. The attendance at all police stations has been a relief for top police officers and Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara who went all out, including announcing the decision to sanction weekly offs, money to buy ration and better housing facilities, to convince the policemen to not agitate.

Speaking with media persons on Saturday evening, Dr Parameshwara said that the police arrested six persons, including Poornima, the wife of Shashidhar Venugopal who is in judicial custody. “I have to thank all the police constables for attending duty on behalf of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, myself and top police officers. By attending duty and not listening to outside elements, the police constables have increased our responsibility. We have convened a meeting with top police officers next week to discuss 30 demands submitted by Karnataka State Police Association,’’ Dr Parameshwara said.

The Home Minister said that Ramesh Gowda was taken into custody for wearing police uniform and staging a protest in front of Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Ramanagaram. “Vatal Nagaraj of Vatal Paksha has been arrested for staging protest at Chalukya Circle in Bengaluru. Ramakrishna, a DAR constable, is arrested in Mandya for staging protest. The police also took two women into preventive custody along with Poornima Shashidhar for staging protest at the Freedom Park,’’ the home minister said.

Ban on media

Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP) Om Prakash has ordered Bangalore City Police Commissioner NS Megharikh to take measures to prevent entry of media persons into the city's police quarters. The City Police Commissioner had directed Deputy Commissioners of Police to deploy CRPF or Civil Defence Policemen at the police quarters to prevent not only the entry of media persons but also family members of policemen staging protests demanding the state government to provide better housing facilities.

Prakash had defended the decision to keep media away from police quarters. "Why should media persons enter the police quarters? There may be some issues but media persons need not worry about those issues. These are all family issues. Will you visit my home if there is quarrel taking place at my home?'' Om Prakash asked.

Leader’s wife arrested

The police arrested Poornima, the wife of Shashidhar Venugopal, for staging a protest at the Freedom Park. The police whisked Poornima along with two women activists —  Girija and Umadevi — away in a Hoysala police jeep to Upperpet Police Station. According to reliable sources, the police followed her vehicle from a private TV channel office near Shivananda Circle till the Freedom Park where she wanted to stage a protest demanding the release of her husband Shashidhar Venugopal, president of the Karnataka State Police Mahasangha. Shashidhar was arrested on Wednesday night from his residence in New Yelahanka. The police have registered a case against him under Sections 124A 166 read/with 109 IPC, Section 4 Police Forces (Restriction of Rights) Act 1966, Section 4 Police (Incitement to Disaffection) Act 1922, Section 5 KESMA read/with 120-B IPC. He was produced before a court that remanded him to judicial custody until June 16.
