At a meeting organised to celebrate Congressman G Parameshwara’s five-year-run as Karnataka Congress president, the leader spoke of how he had been humiliated for being a Dalit while growing up, the Deccan Herald reports.

He was trying to position himself as a Dalit leader when he recounted these experiences. He spoke of how he had not been allowed to drink water in a glass but had to drink from a bowl.

His father was a Member of the Legislative Council but he wasn’t allowed to enter a saloon to cut his hair. The report adds that Parameshwara was emotional when he spoke of these instances.

Congressman G Parameshwara also said that untouchability was still being practised in the state. He said he wanted to follow the footsteps of BR Ambedkar and bring dignity to the Dalits, adds the report.
