MH Ambareesh, the actor-turned-politician who was one among the 14 ministers sacked by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday, has resigned as Congress MLA. Ambareesh sent the resignation letter to Shivashankar Reddy, Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Assembly, through his personal assistant Srinivasa. The Deputy Speaker had received the letter since Kagodu Thimmappa, Speaker of the Assembly, was inducted into Cabinet on Sunday. The Deputy Speaker is yet to take a decision on the resignation letter.

Ambareesh had served as the Minister for Housing in Siddaramaiah’s Cabinet. Expressing disappointment over dropping Ambareesh from the Cabinet, his wife written on Facebook: “Being non-corrupt, straight forward & honest might not win todays battle... but time will prove the ultimate winner in any war”.

Meanwhile, five to six Congress MLAs are expected to follow the suit if the party leadership fails to convince them to remain with Congress. MLAs such as ST Somasekhar, Munirathna, Byrathi Basavaraj, M Krishnappa alias Layout Krishnappa, Priya Krishna and RV Devaraj are expected to announce their decision of quitting Congress by Monday or Tuesday. Srinivas Prasad, former minister for revenue, has also expressed disappointment over being dropped from the Cabinet and sympathised with Ambareesh who also met the same fate.

“Congress high command should have asked Siddaramaiah to quit instead of following his advice to drop 14 ministers. Siddaramaiah has forgotten my help when he joined Congress. I think he is the most inefficient chief minister,’’ Srinivas Prasad said.

MLAs blame Kharge

ST Somasekhar, who played a key role in Congress coming to power in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council, is determined to quit as MLA. Somasekhar said that Congress leaders failed to recognise his service to Congress. “They cannot ignore my contribution to Congress. It was me who spent the money to repair and renovate Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) building while Mallikarjun Kharge was the KPCC president. Now, Kharge wants to promote his son Priyank, a first time MLA, as a minister. I do not know why Kharge has forgotten my service and contribution to Congress. Am I not qualify to become a minister?,’’ Somasekhar asked.

Mallikayya Guttedar, Congress MLA from Afzalpur, has resigned as the KPCC member and he is expected to take a final call on resigning as Congress MLA after consulting his supporters on June 22.
