Karnataka BJP to observe 'Anti-People's Mandate Day' to protest Kumaraswamy's swearing-in

Terming the Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress coalition government an "unholy" alliance, the Karnataka BJP will on Wednesday observe the swearing-in ceremony of HD Kumaraswamy as "Anti-People's Mandate Day". 

Kumaraswamy will take oath as the Karnataka Chief Ministery at a ceremony on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday. The ceremony will be attended by to be attended by a galaxy of opposition leaders and chief ministers. 

The saffron party has decided to boycott today's oath-taking ceremony and will observe "anti-popular mandate day" to protest the formation of the coalition government.

Senior BJP leaders would hold a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Bengaluru, while its workers in black attire will hold demonstrations in districts, state BJP general secretary C T Ravi told reporters. 

In a statement on Tuesday, the BJP alleged that the "unholy" Congress-JD(S) alliance has hijacked the people's mandate.

BJP's Karnataka unit president BS Yeddyurappa will lead the demonstrations in Bengaluru.

"The Congress and JDS have hijacked the people's mandate and entered into an unholy alliance. On the day this unholy coalition government takes office, the BJP has decided to observe this day as "Anti People's Mandate Day," the BJP statement said.

The statement also mentioned that thousands of party functionaries will stage black flag demonstration throughout the state.

Kumaraswamy's swearing-in ceremony will be held on Wednesday in the presence of top opposition leaders. 

Kumaraswamy will be the second chief minister to take oath in Karnataka within a week, after Yeddyurappa stepped down without facing the floor test on May 19 in the face of an imminent defeat.

It will be Kumaraswamy's second term in office. He had earlier headed the JD(S)-BJP coalition government for 20 months, between February 2006 and October 2007. 

Karnataka Congress president G Parameshwara will be sworn-in as the deputy chief minister of the state. 

The BJP, which is the single largest party with 104 MLAs in the 224-member Assembly (effective strength 221), has claimed that the coalition government will not complete its full term.

The Congress has 78 lawmakers in the Lower House against the 37 of the JD(S).
