The Congress attributed the rising "fear and frustration" in Prime Minister Narendra Modi for committing follies while making statements regarding Gen. Thimayya and Gen Cariappa.

"It is found and you saw yesterday in the false and superficial statements regarding Gen. Cariappa and Gen. Thimayya, which prove beyond doubt two things – one the country's CEOs lack of grasp of history, and second, the incapacity of his army of researchers to properly feed him correct information," said Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

Invoking the two Army Generals, natives of Karnataka, at a public rally in Kalaburgi on Thursday, PM Modi had said, "In 1948, it was under General Thimayya's leadership that the war against Pakistan was won. But after that victory, the saviour of Kashmir, General Thimayya was repeatedly insulted by then Prime Minister Nehru and then Defence Minister Krishna Menon. And it was for this reason, his honour that General Thimayya had to resign from his post."

According to military history, Gen. Thimayya was selected as the Army chief by PM Nehru himself in 1957. When Thimayya wanted to resign in 1959 over differences with defence minister V K Krishna Menon, it was Nehru who persuaded him not to resign. Thimayya finally retired in 1961 and was appointed as Commander of UN Forces in Cyprus in July 1964.

Modi further said that the India-China incident is recorded in history… "and with Field Marshal Cariappa, what kind of behaviour was on display".

The fact is that Gen Cariappa was made the Commander chief of the Army in 1949 and had retired in 1953 while the China war had taken place in 1962. Gen Cariappa was appointed as High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand where he served until 1956 and in April 1986 was conferred the rank of Field Marshal.

"The Prime Minister in his insatiable urge bordering on greed to attack the Congress actually ended up insulting comprehensively the people of Karnataka, insulting its entrepreneurs, IT Technologists and labeling Bengaluru as the 'Valley of Sin' from the 'Silicon Valley'," said Singhvi.

PM Modi had on Thursday said people had made Bengaluru into India's 'Silicon Valley' but the Congress government turned it into a 'Valley of Sin'.

'DIVISIVE' AGENDA

  • Singhvi also accused Modi of spreading "divisiveness" in the poll-bound state

  • He alleged that Modi is aiming to divert the public attention from key issues.

  • He pointed out Cauvery dispute, dilution of the SC ST Act, joblessness and declining economy as govt failures.
