With the state government employees in Karnataka abstaining from work, all the government offices wore a deserted look on Thursday. All the offices at Vidhana Soudha remained closed due to the one-day strike observed by lakhs of state government employees demanding pay on par with Central Government employees. Employees working on a contract basis turned up for work but went back home after some time since there was no one to assign any work to them.

Apart from state government offices, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) offices also remained closed. The employees of BBMP and BDA abstained from work in support of state government employees. The conservancy workers attended duty as usual on Thursday to collect garbage from door to door.

The one-day strike by the state government had an impact on educational institutions in the Bengaluru as well. According to reliable sources, first and second D.Ed, DPED and PPT exams, scheduled on Thursday, have been postponed to June 8. The degree college professors of Bangalore University observed pen down strike for two hours in support of the state government employees’ agitation. “Around 3,500 employees work in Vidhana Soudha, Vikas Soudha and MS Building. All of them abstained from work today in support of our long-pending demands,’’ said Subramanya S Kumta, president, Vidhana Soudha Employees’ Association.

Overwhelming response

Speaking with dna, BP Manje Gowda, president, Karnataka State Employees’ Association, said the strike call given by the association has received overwhelming response not only in Bengaluru but also other parts of the state. “I am very happy with the success of our agitation. I think the government will take measures to redress our grievances. I hope there will be no need for us to organise similar agitation in future,’’ Gowda said.

When asked about a circular issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) taking action against those who instigate government employees to participate in the agitation, Gowda said that circular was a routine one and employees need not worry about it.
