Kanpur hooch tragedy: CM Yogi suspends 5 excise officials of two districts

Taking serious note of 13 deaths in hooch tragedy in Kanpur and Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath government on Monday suspended five excise officials of the two districts.

A decision to this effect was taken on Monday after the Principal Secretary Excise Kalpana Awasthi visited Kanpur on Sunday and submitted a preliminary report to the government. On her recommendation five excise officials were placed under suspension.

Those who have been suspended included District excise officer Manish Kumar, Chief excise Inspector R.P. Dixit, posted in Kanpur City, and Excise Inspectors Nand Kumar Nishra, Anil Dohre and Nilesh Kumar, who were posted in Kanpur Dehat.

Awasthi said that a probe was on to ascertain how the licensed shops were selling spurious liquor and who were the suppliers. The police have already nabbed 11 persons, including the main accused Vinay Singh, in connection with the hooch tragedy. Vinay Singh is a grandson of former Samajwadi Party MLA Ram Swaroop Singh Gaur.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the victim. Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma visited Kanpur on Sunday to distribute cheques and meet those still battling for life in Kanpur hospitals.

The Kanpur SSP Akhilesh Kumar said that cases out of 11 persons detained, the police have finally registered cases against 7, including Vinay Singh and Neeraj Singh, grandsons of former Samajwadi Party MLA Ramswaroop Singh Gaur. A reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced by the police on owner of the shop Satish Mishra and Salesman Sharvan Kumar, who are absconding.

Meanwhile, another person identified as Mahesh Yadav alias Bhola (28) of Haitpur village under Sachendi Police Station died early Monday moring in LLR Hospital in Kanpur taking the toll to 13.
