Prominent Kannada writer, poet, D Javare Gowda, popularly known as 'De Ja Go', passed away at a hospital in Mysuru on Monday evening.

De Ja Gow, 101, who also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University, was admitted to the hospital after facing a cardiac problem.

Gowda, who significantly contributed to Kannada literature, worked towards promoting the Kannada language as the medium of instruction in schools.

The noted writer also played an important role in getting the classical language status to Kannada by launching an indefinite fast.
