JNU Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar will address a conclave of the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) in south Mumbai on Saturday. After his spitfire speech at Nagpur last week, he will be locking horns with several right-wing organisations in the city.

The JNUSU leader will speak at the Janata Shikshan Sanstha, in Mumbai and his speech will be on politicising of universities and students by several saffron-brigade parties.

The event, scheduled on April 23, has already stirred controversy with several units of pro-Hindu organisations vowing to foil Kumar's address, whom they accuse of spreading anti-national sentiments.

This will be Kumar's maiden visit to the city, after he was charged with sedition over in the JNU row, in which a section of students were accused of chanting anti-national slogans, in February. The incident had sparked nationwide debate on patriotism with a face-off between the student groups and the BJP-led government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to iamin, President of AIYF Prasad Ghagre said that senior members of the unit met Kumar in New Delhi and invited him to address the conclave. "He will speak on the political insulation done in various universities and educational institutions by some parties. He will also talk with several students' union leaders on how to avoid been targeted by some political agendas," Ghagre said.

Defending Kumar's presence at the conclave, Ghagre said, "Kanhaiya has full faith in the Indian Constitution and he is not anti-national at all."

The event will begin at 2 pm on Saturday, with Kumar also carrying out informal interactions with local communist party leaders and other left-wing units.

Special security for Kanhaiya Kumar

In wake of the series of attacks— stones were pelted at his car and a shoe flung at him during the Nagpur meeting— the Mumbai Police has assured AIYF of a thick security cover for Kumar.

Members of the AIYF have already met with the Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar, who has vouched to provide security for Kumar during his day-long stay in the city.

"We have also had a meeting with local police officials on the same note. Security cover will be provided from airport to the event hall in Worli and back. There will be thorough screening of all individuals entering the event on Saturday," a senior AIYF member told iamin
