A day after actor-politician Kamal Haasan ruled out any alliance with the DMK and AIADMK, newly appointed Tamil Nadu Congress unit chief KS Alagiri on Friday appealed to the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder to join the DMK-led alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections to protect secularism.

The Congress leader's appeal has come on a day when the DMK hit back at Haasan saying that the actor was trying to satisfy vested interests and gain political mileage.

On Thursday, Haasan had made it clear that he would not want to dirty his hands by aligning with the DMK and AIADMK. "There will be no alliance with both of them (the DMK and the AIADMK). We don't want to dirty our hands. And this is not to blame anyone, but just to keep reminding us that we should keep our hands clean," Kamal said, responding to questions whether he would ally with the two Dravidian parties.

At the same time, the actor appealed to Ramadoss's PMK, Vijayakanth's DMDK and Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi to not to enter into an alliance with the Dravidian parties. The actor also put to rest any understanding with the Congress.

When asked about Haasan's remark, Congress leader Alagiri said, "If Kamal wants to protect secularism, he should join our alliance with DMK. If he is willing join us, we will certainly consider his demands."

A senior DMK leader felt that it was not proper on the part of the Congress leader to given an open invite to Haasan without consulting us. "How could we align with Kamal Haasan who termed DMK as corrupt party?" he asked.

Earlier, DMK's Velachery MLA and actor Vaagai Chandrasekaran issued a statement hitting out at the actor-politician for criticising his party. "Despite knowing very well that DMK and Congress have strong ties, the actor tried to forge an alliance with latter. When it failed, he is criticising DMK. It only shows his political immaturity," he said.

Haasan'smeeting with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi last year triggered a rumour of him joining his alliance. The actor, however, maintained that it was only a courtesy call and nothing to do with politics.
