Actor Kamal Haasan has apologised for hastily supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetization announcement, last year.

"I owe an open apology to the people for hurriedly supporting the plan," Kamal wrote in his weekly column titled "A Big Apology" in a Tamil magazine.

Haasan's apology came weeks after he justified his support for the demonetization policy in an interview to a news channel. "demonetization is a good idea. I am not an economist. But now there is criticism about it. Let's see till proven guilty we will not jump to conclusions," he had said this weeks ago.

When the Centre had scrapped Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes in November last year, the actor had then tweeted that "Salute Mr Modi. This move has to be celebrated across political party lines. Most importantly by earnest taxpayers."

"I not only extended my support to the scheme hoping it would help eradicate the back money but I thought the people should bear with some inconveniences. But some of my comrades including those who studied economics called me over the phone and criticised my views," the actor wrote in the article published.

Kamal said that after some days he felt that noteban was a good idea but the way it was implemented was wrong. "Later when the economists started criticising it, I thought that even though the intention of the scheme was good, it was not practical. I started doubting when the government came out with weak responses for the strong criticism," he explained his sudden turn in his stand.

Apologising for his hasty support to the note ban, he said that the sign of a good leader is one who accepts their mistake. "If the PM accepts his mistake, my salaam awaits him," he said.

Haasan has made it clear that he would be joining politics soon and float his own party. There is a strong speculation among his fans that the actor might make an important announcement on his birthday on November 7. He also met AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan.
