A branch of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), a free residential educational institution for poor and tribal students based in Odisha, is all set to open a branch in Kolkata. Professor Achyuta Samanta, founder of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and KISS, at a press conference on Sunday said, "A land has been procured near IIM Calcutta in Joka. An educational institute for Tribals — the first one in Bengal — will be set up here with an initial investment of Rs 25 crore."

With a capacity of 1,000 students, the school is expected to be functional in 2020. "We will ensure that the building and other required infrastructure is ready so that the first academic year of the school can begin in January 2020," Samanta said.

He said that after the success of KIIT and KISS in Odisha, he intended to open up branches in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand, but the major impediment had been procurement of land. "Land availability in Bihar is very tough. Jharkhand government, considering the initiative for poor and Tribal children, has approved 28 acres of land in Ranchi. In Bengal we bought five acre of privately-owned land for the institution," Samanta added.

It was also found out that the project was also ready to set its foot across the border, in Bangladesh. "Two branches — in Jessore and Dhaka — will be opened shortly. Both have been joint initiatives with NGOs and while it will be a school only for girls in Jessore, in Dhaka it will be a boys-only school," he added.

Asked if he sought government help for the purpose, he said that he fears work might get slowed down owing to red-tapism if government intervention is sought, and added that it was good enough if they lend their permission to set up such institutes.

Samanta also announced that the 39th World Congress of Poets would be held at KIIT and KISS, Bhubaneswar in October 2019 where over 500 poets, writers and Nobel Laureates from 100 countries would converge. "Other than them, 2000 writers and poets from India and another 2000 from Odisha alone would partake in the event.
