More than the BJP, it's the prestige of the so-called 'mahagathbandhan' of the Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh, which is at stake in Kairana Lok Sabha bypolls, where campaigning ended on Saturday. The polling will be held on May 28.

Though the Samajwadi Party, BSP, Congress, RLD, AAP, Nishad Party and Bhim Army have all come together against the BJP, their united front was not visible on the ground in Kairana. Even after Karnataka bonhomie, the SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav and BSP Supremo Mayawati stayed away from campaigning in Kairana, in favour of the united opposition-supported RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan, who is a Muslim Gujjar.

"After winning Gorakhpur and Phulpur with the support of the BSP, our alliance will get bigger and stronger from Kairana and take final shape for the 2019 Lok Sabha, to stop the Modi juggernaut," pointed Sunil Sajan, the SP spokesperson.

Strategically, Mayawati has left the responsibility of wresting the Kairana Lok Sabha seat from BJP on the RLD Chief Ajit Singh and his son Jayant Chowdhary. With support from all non-BJP parties, it's an opportunity for the RLD to re-establish itself to stake its claim on a bigger pie from united opposition's seat sharing for 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

With zero seats in Lok Sabha, no doubt that Mayawati has emerged the undisputed leader of the non-BJP opposition front in Uttar Pradesh, which may go beyond the state in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

For the BJP, result in Kairana Lok Sabha bypolls, after losing Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats, will be an indicator of what's in store for it during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, with all non-BJP parties coming together against it.
