Justice Karnan postpones date for SC judges to appear before him

Calcutta ​High Court judge Justice CS Karnan who had summoned seven Supreme Court judges including the Chief Justice of India Justice JS Khehar to his New Town residence, on Friday, had, in another order, postponed the date of ​​appearance to May 1.

In the latest common suo motu order issued on Friday, Justice Karnan has added the name of Justice R Banumathy, along with the seven others to appear before him on May 1. The reason for this addition, according to Friday’s order is that Justice Banumathy allegedly, through an order on February 2, 2016, h​ad ​without procedure according to the law’ restrained Justice Karnan from his ‘judicial and administrative assignments at the Madras High Court’.

Other than the Chief Justice of India, the other judges named in the order are – Justice Dipak Misra, Justice J Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Manad B Lokur, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice R Banumathy.

Further​,​ Justice Karnan also said that till May 1, the judges should not leave the country. A copy of Friday’s order has been forwarded to the director of the Air Control Authority, New Delhi among others. ‘In the meantime​,​ this court also directs the Air Control Authority, New Delhi, not to permit the said accused 1 to 8 from going abroad until disposal of this crucial issue...’ the order read.

Justice Karnan had earlier alleged that the judges named in the order had offended under the Schedule Castes & Scheduled Tribes Atrocities Act.

Justice Karnan, who is facing charges of contempt of court by the Supreme Court had earlier said he sought replies from the judges in person or through their council regarding declaration of guilt and quantum of punishment at the makeshift court on April 28.
