The Tamil Nadu and West Bengal police continued their search for Kolkata High Court judge Dr CS Karnan for a second consecutive day on Thursday, even as his aide W Peter Ramesh Kumar claimed that the judge "may or may not have left the country". However, Justice Karnan's lawyer claims that the judge has been staying in Chennai.

Justice Karnan, who has been staying at the Government Guest House in Chennai since Tuesday morning dramatically disappeared on Wednesday when a team of West Bengal police arrived to take him into custody, following the Supreme Court's order sentencing him to six months in jail on contempt charges.

When asked about the whereabouts of Justice Karnan, Kumar, who meet the judge on Tuesday, said that he may or may not have left the country. "I can't reveal his exact location. He may or may not have left the country," he said. Kumar, who was suspended by the bar council in 2016, said the judge has adopted a two-pronged strategy of approaching the Supreme Court and the President at the same time.

Justice Karnan, Mr Kumar said, is seeking an interim bail until the final orders are passed by the Supreme Court. "He also wants the President to forward the complaint, which is pending with him neither accepted nor rejected, to Parliament for impeachment proceedings," he said, adding that Justice Karnan also wanted the President to file a case before the International Court of Justice as in the case of Pakistani prisoner whose stay on his execution has been granted. He said that until then he wants to keep himself away from the police so that he can prepare the papers and produce them before the bail authority.

However, the claims made by Kumar could not be verified with either Justice Karnan or his family members. Dismissing the claims made by Kumar, lawyer Mathews Nedumpara said Justice Karnan was very much in Chennai.
