Lawyers in Gujarat can present heated arguments without being roasted in their black coats. The respite has been offered by the Gujarat high court, which issued a notification allowing lawyers to do away with black coats during the summer.

They can now come to court in white shirts and black ties. The order will be applicable from the next month. A committee of three judges, which included chief justice KS Radhakrishnan, took the decision on March 18 after a proposal was forwarded by the representatives of the Bar Council of Gujarat (BCG).

The BCG also withdrew two petitions from the high court seeking liberty from black coats during the summer.

Given the fact that summers are extremely oppressive in the state, the BCG has been pressing its case, making representations to the Bar Council of India and other forums for some time now. The decision was welcomed by the lawyers’ fraternity across the state as well as by the BCG.

The high court has issued a notification allowing lawyers to do away with black coats during period between April 1 and July 31, said Vijay Patel and JJ Patel, chairman and vice-chairman of the BCG.
