Minutes before Alok Kumar Verma took charge as Delhi Police chief, the Commissioner's office on Monday witnessed high drama as a woman alleging corruption by police officials scurried into a lobby full of media representatives waiting for a briefing by the new top cop.

The woman, carrying a two-month-old child in her lap, apparently unaware of what was going on in the police headquarters on Monday, made her way into the lobby outside the Police Commissioner's office, screaming that her in-laws were trying to kill her and the child. She told security officials there that she wanted to meet the police chief and report how officials in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar allegedly took bribe and gave a clean chit to her husband.

The woman, who identified herself as Arifa, is a native of Bangladesh and lives here with her in-laws in southeast Delhi's Batla House area. She waved a police complaint as she screamed, alleging corruption by police officials. In no time, security officials whisked her away. She later approached the media and narrated her ordeal on camera.

Around 12.15 PM, new commissioner Alok Kumar Verma and his predecessor Bhim Sain Bassi came to the lobby, where the latter addressed media persons and left the police headquarters with the entire top brass bidding him farewell near the front lawn.

Special Commissioner of Police (General Administration) Vimla Mehra, who is Verma's predecessor as DG Delhi Prisons, also retired today. She left the premises minutes before Bassi. In another 15 minutes, Verma chaired a meeting with the top brass of the force and the woman could not get a chance to meet the commissioner.
