With the Supreme Court taking a stern stance on the Whistleblower Protection Act, All India Institute of Medical Sciences' (AIIMS) former chief vigilance officer (CVO) Sanjiv Chaturvedi on Wednesday hoped that appropriate steps would be initiated post the apex court's observation to set things right.
"In this country, only the judiciary is the last ray of hope for those honest officials who are exposing corruption despite being subjected to torture. And, after the Supreme Court?s stern observation, I hope steps would be taken in this direction to correct things," he said. "The way honest officials are being tortured, and no action is being taken in spite of intervention by higher-ups in the Government, the situation is very disappointing," said Chaturvedi, adding that it was very important for the executive to have will power for proper execution of the law.
"Unless the executive, comprising political leadership and civil services, don't have willpower, it is very difficult to implement a protection act. As in my case, despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervention things went wrong. I have been deprived of my all my responsibilities and works, and I am facing a very humiliating situation where I am withdrawing my salary without performing my job. I met the Cabinet Secretary and others, but nobody has any justification for this," said the former AIIMS CVO.
Elaborating on his case, Chaturvedi said he hoped that there would be an impartial probe into the matter Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal intervention. "However, the way I was tortured and humiliated for over one and half years in spite of the Prime Minister's intervention, there could not be a situation worse than this," he added.
The apex court on Wednesday sought reply from the Centre that what step it intends to take for whistleblowers protection by the time a law is passed by Parliament. The SC observed that whistleblowers are keys in unearthing corruption and need to be protected through proper mechanism. The Centre has been given one week to file response.
