At a first of its kind of  interaction, journalists across LoC decided to set-up a mechanism of sharing content including both news and views,  to break various myths and distortions associated with their respective regions.

A group of 29 journalists, comprising editors and reporters from Kashmir discussed a range of mutual issues related to their profession and their role in the conflict. The journalists also talked about the possibilities of building linkages across the Line of Control (LoC) to help build a peaceful atmosphere.

“The thrust of the deliberations was on how to improve the contact across the line of divide and try to reach out to the readers with the accurate information. For this the discussion was held on various mechanisms to translate this into reality,” said a joint statement, issued at the end of two-day deliberations. Despite acrimony attached to botched up national security advisor level talks, both the governments of India and Pakistan had facilitated this first of its kind of interaction.

The journalists urged both countries to facilitate movement of journalists on both the sides. A four-member joint group was also constituted to look into content sharing between the different media organizations and also a joint working group of the journalists from the two sides that would further build up the linkages. In the next step, two newspapers from each side will be encouraged to sign a proper MoU on content sharing, so that readers from both sides are informed about the news about each other region on real time basis.

Other decisions taken at the meeting included documenting history of journalism on both sides, creating a digital library related to J&K, trying to circulate hard copies of newspapers through cross-LoC routes, involve media departments on both the sides of LoC, arrange professionals to lecture  journalism students in the universities of both regions, to publish a six-monthly newsletter, online and print, institute awards for the best cross-LoC reporting, and preparation of a directory of  Journalists across LoC working all over the world.

The conference, a first of its kind, organized by Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR) and Center for Peace Development and Reforms (CPDR) in association with Kashmir Initiative Group.
