Journalist working with Hindi daily 'Hindustan' shot dead in Kanpur

The Kanpur killing comes almost a week after the brazen murder of crime reporter Suddip Datta Bhaumik in Tripura.

A journalist working with a prominent Hindi daily was brutally murdered in Kanpur's Bilhaur area on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Naveen Gupta, who was working with Hindi daily 'Hindustan'.

According to the police, Gupta was on his way to home, when unidentified attackers riding bikes stopped him and started firing indiscriminately.

Four bullets hit Gupta when the attackers opened fire on him from a close range near Nagar Palika building. Four empty cartridges were recovered by the police from the murder site. Gupta died on the spot.

The Superintendent of Police (Rural Area) Jai Prakash said that the journalist was hit by bullets on head, chest and face.

“We have called the forensic team and seeking details from those present at the time of the indiscriminate firing by assailants and family members to ascertain the motive behind the murder,” the police official said.

A case has been registered and body has been sent for the post-mortem. At present, the police have no clue about the murder of journalist.

Gupta’s family members claimed that they were having domestic dispute with the in-laws of his brother’s wife.

“We are working on all possible theories and old enmity is one of them. A team has been formed to work out the case as soon as possible,” Prakash said.

The Kanpur Press Club President Avneesh Dixit has condemned the murder of a scribe. Agitated over the killing, a delegation of Kanpur journalist met with the SSP Akhilesh Kumar Meena and demanded arrest of the killers at the earliest.

The murder comes almost a month after another journalist was killed in similar manner in October.

Rajesh Mishra was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district. Mishra was working with Dainik Jagran. He was also a block in-charge of the RSS.
