Journalist KJ Singh murder case: Man speeding away in journalist's car executed double murder, say cops

According to Chahal, K J Singh and Gaurav Kumar had a tiff after Singh questioned him for sitting suspiciously in a park close to his house on the night of the crime.

A man who hails from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested in Mohali in connection with the murder case of senior journalist KJ Singh and his mother, Gurcharan Kaur. 

Police on Thursday claimed to have cracked the murder with the arrest of accused Gaurav Kumar who was driving KJ Singh's green Ford Ikon car that was missing since the double murder on September 22. 

According to media reports, the knife used in the crime was recovered from the Gaurav. KJ Singh’s car documents were also recovered from him.

According to the police, the accused told them that on the night intervening September 22-23, he reached KJ’s residence at about 10.30 pm, repots The Indian Express.

“He entered KJ’s residence by scaling a low-height boundary wall. He rang the door bell twice and then took cover in the dark. When KJ opened the door, the accused first assaulted him. Since KJ was tall and well-built, a scuffle took place. The accused was carrying a knife with which he stabbed KJ Singh multiple times, dragged his body to the bedroom and then slit his throat. Since KJ’s mother was also present in the house at that time, the accused killed her as well. Later, he stole the television – kept it in KJ’s car – and escaped,” one of the investigating police officers told The Indian Express.

Addressing the media, Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal claimed that the case had been cracked and the knife used in the crime, K J Singh's car that was stolen, a mobile phone, a wrist watch and a digital video recorder were recovered from Kumar, who is in his late 20s.

According to Chahal, K J Singh and Kumar had a tiff after Singh questioned him for sitting suspiciously in a park close to his house on the night of the crime. "Singh had questioned the youth for sitting suspiciously in the park and slapped him, following which he killed the journalist and his mother, who was an eyewitness to her son's murder," the police official claimed.

Kumar had executed the brutal double murder alone, the SSP claimed.

Police claimed to have apprehended Kumar today afternoon from the airport road near Sohana Gurdwara here when he was driving Singh's car with a fake number plate.
Kumar was currently staying at Kajheri in Chandigarh, according to the police officials.

According to the post-mortem report, K J Singh had received multiple stab injuries, between 14 and 17, inflicted through a sharp-edged weapons while his mother was strangulated to death. 

Senior Journalist KJ Singh, 64, and his 92-year-old mother were found murdered on September 23 afternoon. While Singh’s throat had been slit and he had been stabbed in the stomach, his bedridden mother was strangulated. 

A special investigation team was set up Punjab police chief Suresh Aroa after Chief Minister Amarinder Singh made a specific request in this regard. 

KJ Singh a former news editor with The Indian Express had also worked for The Tribune and The Times of India in Chandigarh.
