In a jolt to Congress, Mayawati’s lone BSP Minister in the JD(S)-Congress government in Karnataka N Mahesh quit his position on Thursday.

Though the minister said he is resigning over “personal reasons”, it is believed the decision is triggered by Mayawati’s decision not to tie-up with the Congress in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The minister, however, claimed that he has not consulted Mayawati before taking the step.

“I am resigning my post as cabinet minister but continue as an MLA and I support the JD(S) and Kumaraswamy... I want to concentrate on my constituency,” Mahesh said.

Mayawati had formed the alliance with Kumaraswamy before the assembly elections held in May. The Congress walked in much later, after elections, after it became obvious the BJP will emerge as the single largest party but fall short of majority.

Mahesh vowed to continue his support to the coalition government and said he would campaign for the JD(S)during the bypolls for three Lok Sabha and two assembly seats on November 3.

“I do not have any grouse against anybody in the government. Also, there was a need to strengthen the party base ahead of the Lok Sabha elections,” said Mahesh. He said he would focus more on his assembly constituency Kollegal and to strengthen his party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
