Demonetization, extreme nationalism, cow vigilantism, beef row, division among the communities and freedom of expression were the issues on which the opposition leaders spoke at third edition of ‘Saajhi Virasat Bachao Conference’ held at Jaipur on Thursday. The conference was held under the chairmanship of JDU leader Sharad Yadav.

The opposition leaders took digs at the Modi government but were found were very much off the mark when it came to sticking with the motive of the meet. Most speeches bordered on personal attacks and there were several instances when they put their foot in the mouth.

CPI leader Atul Anjan mocked Modi’s poor sense of historical facts and called him a ‘great fool’. This was in reference to Modi’s remark about bringing ashes of saffron icon Syamapad Mukherjee from London to India. Anjan quipped that Mukherjee did not die in London.

In a lighter mood Anjan addressed Congress leader Anand Sharma who was also sharing the stage, to fight in the court if a defamation suit is filed against him.

NCP general secretary Tariq Anwar too spoke on similar lines and called Modi an impersonator who was fooling the people.

Sharad Yadav, the person behind the show, termed the national scenario as grim. He alleged that when religion is mixed with politics ’a situation prevails which is similar to what is happening in Iraq, Syria and Pakistan’. He added, “Composite culture’ survived for centuries in India is under threat and also threat looms over the constitution of India. You (Modi) says that none should fight on basis of faith. But, your party rules in 17 states and you rule the nation, and now see what is happening. You want an India without opposition.”

From Congress Anand Sharma and RPCC chief Sachin Pilot extended their support to the the campaign. Pilot making scathing attack on saffron party spoke, “The leaders of BJP talk about ‘Congress Mukta Bharat’. This will not happen today neither tomorrow. We struggle not for the power but for poor,” said Pilot adding that BJP is engaged frivolous issues like Love Jihad, Ghar Vapasi and Cow Vigilantism while core issue of inflation is not talked by anyone.

Pilot claimed that Congress will register a big victory in the assembly election slated next year in Rajasthan. “We will pack up BJP in the assembly election and form a government .” Other leaders who spoke on the occasion were CMP general secretary Sitaram Yechuri, leader of opposition in Rajasthan assembly Rameshwer Dudi, National Conference’s Surjeet Singh Salakhia, RJD’s Manoj Jha, Trinmool Congress Sukhendu Shekhar Roy and RLD’s Jayant Choudhary.
