After a massive seat cut in MPhil and PhD courses at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the upcoming session, the existing research students at the varsity claim that they have not received grants from the university since January 2017. Following which, affected students, from the economically weaker sections have asked the university if they have received funding from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Scores of students have not received non-National Eligibility Test (NET) fellowship – meant for MPhil and PhD students who are not eligible to sit for the NET and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) exam, or are not able to sit for it for some other reason, and the Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship which is being given to Bachelors of Arts (BA) and Masters of Arts (MA) students, on the basis of their income certificate.

“I come from an economically weaker background. I’m highly dependent on my non-NET fellowship (Rs 5000 per month), which I haven’t been getting since January. I couldn’t pay the mess bills in the last two months,” said a first year MPhil student from the Center of Social Sciences.

Several other students are also facing a similar crisis. “I am waiting for my fellowship money as I have to buy some books, which are really expensive. I have not received even a penny since January,” said a second year MPhil student from the School of Languages.

Students pursuing their BA and MA degrees allege that they have not received their MCM scholarships in the last few months. “I had applied for the MCM scholarship in the last semester, but I haven’t received it yet,” said a first year BA (Portuguese) student.

Calling it “vendetta politics” of the UGC, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) has written to the varsity administration requesting them to look into the matter. “The fellowship cut is another blow to the students. Many students are in the last months of writing their dissertation and thesis, and several others have to leave for field work. But, since they haven’t received their fellowship they are facing serious hardships,” said JNUSU president Mohit Pandey.

“We have also written to the Vice Chancellor (V-C) that he should take this matter seriously and pursue this matter with the UGC in the capacity of both, UGC member and V-C, but, we did not receive any communication from them,” he added.
