The anticipatory bail plea of Anmol Ratan, accused of raping a 28-year-old JNU student in a university hostel room, came up before Patiala House court on Tuesday which decided to hear it on Saturday. The court also recorded the statement of the PhD student who alleged that Ratan had raped her.

The petition was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Amit Bansal who put up the matter for arguments on the next date of hearing on August 27. Police claimed a first-year Ph.D student had alleged that Ratan, also a JNU student, raped her on August 20.

According to her complaint filed at Vasant Kunj (North) police station, she had posted on her Facebook account that she wanted to watch a movie and asked if anyone had its CD. It said Ratan apparently messaged her saying he had a copy. Thereafter, he picked her up on the pretext of giving her a CD of the film and took her to Brahamputra Hostel, where he stays. She alleged that he offered her a spiked drink and raped her. He also threatened her and asked her not to report the matter, she said.

However, the woman approached the police on August 21 and a case of rape was registered and further probe is underway. Students body AISA has claimed that it has taken strong note of the allegations and has expelled Ratan from its membership.

Political game continues ahead of student polls

Political agenda setting continued over the case ahead of the student union polls in the university. While AISA expelled the accused, Anmol Ratan, from the party, Congress affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI) and BJP's Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad are trying to cash in on the incident by staging protests against it.

JNU Students' Union, which has members from AISA, AISF and ABVP, today staged a protest outside Vasant Kunj police station demanding immediate arrest of Ratan, who today moved an anticipatory bail plea before a city court. ABVP and NSUI also staged separate protests on the varsity campus to highlight the issue of gender insecurity and the "poor" safety of women students.
