All India Students Association (AISA) activist Anmol Ratan, who was booked for allegedly raping a 28-year-old student of Jawahar Lal Nehru University, surrendered on Wednesday to police in South Delhi. The development comes after a city court refused to grant Ratan any protection from arrest and adjourned the matter to August 27. Ratan has been booked under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

According to the police, the JNU PhD scholar recorded her statement before a magistrate on Wednesday and she stood by her earlier statement that she was raped by Anmol. The incident is said to have taken place inside the campus on August 20. "The woman had alleged that in the month of June 2016, she had put a statement on Facebook that she wanted to watch a film called Sairat and asked if anyone had a copy. She alleged that Anmol messaged her that he is having a copy of film. She further added that on August 20, Anmol picked her from her hostel to give her the film and took her to his hostel Brahamputra where he offered some drinks to her and after that committed sexual assault with her and did not allow her to go and threatened her," said a senior police official.

When Ratan’s anticipatory bail application (ABA) was moved on Tuesday, his advocate Rajiv Mohan asserted that the woman and his client knew each other. Mohan argued that the complaint was the result of a “political rivalry” as Ratan belonged to AISA and cited the forthcoming JNU student elections. The court, however, refused to grant Ratan any protection from arrest and adjourned the matter to August 27. In a statement by AISA, Delhi Secretary of the student union said that Anmol had been expelled after the filing of a criminal case against him.

"AISA takes serious note of the fact that Anmol Ratan, a leading activist of AISA, is facing a criminal complaint of sexual assault. He is henceforth expelled from the primary membership of AISA. AISA will reflect on and deal with this issue with all the firmness it deserves. AISA will be unflinching for the principles of gender justice even if it involves a leading member of the organisation. We stand by the complainant in her fight for justice," reporter was informed in a statement.
