The National Conference (NC) on Monday formally sounded the poll bugle and decided to contest alone in the forthcoming Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir.

"National Conference will go alone without forging any alliance. A single party government alone can meet the challenges confronting the state. Our party will give a strong and stable government at the strength of the peoples' massive support," said Omar Abdullah, Vice-President, NC, and former J&K chief minister.

Omar was addressing National Conference District and Block Presidents, and secretaries of the Jammu region at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan in Jammu on Monday afternoon.

"The process for selection of candidates has begun and the National Conference will plunge into elections with a two pronged strategy. First, to expose the PDP-BJP government's failure on all fronts and, second to spell out the priorities of the party in heralding peace and ensuring fast-track development," he said.

Exhorting the workers to gear up for polls, Omar said National Conference has a track record of public service and it has never played with the sentiments of the people, unlike the BJP, by generating passions on regional and religious issues.

Meanwhile, the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delivered a coup-de-grace to Sajad Lone-led Peoples Conference on Monday when they lured back the dissident leader and MP from Baramulla — Muzaffar Hussain Baig — and made him the patron of the party.

The decision to make Baig the patron of the party was taken in a meeting chaired by PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday. "Yes, he has been made the party patron. This position was once held by our founder and former chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed," said a PDP leader.

The decision comes 20 days after Baig raised a banner of revolt when he said that he would seriously consider joining the third front led by separatist-turned-pro India leader Sajad Lone if it emerges.
