J&K town unites to maintain communal harmony in Shopian

Sikhs and Muslims displayed an exemplary communal harmony when they joined hands to prevent Kishtwar-like communal flare up in Shopian in south Kashmir.

Members of both communities held peace march after some miscreants pelted stones on the houses owned by Sikhs in the township which has been on the edge after the killing of five youth allegedly by the security forces.

The All Party Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC), an apex body of the 80,000 Sikhs living in the Valley, said some anti-social elements in the Valley are trying to disturb the age-old brotherhood between the communities “Sikhs are a part of Kashmiri culture and will contribute for peace in the Valley at all costs.

Some anti-social elements are active in the Valley to disturb the brotherhood between two communities and such element need to be nabbed. The incident of ransacking of Sikh houses at Shopian is a glaring  example of that,” said Jagmohan Singh Raina, president of APSCC.

Sikhs and Muslims jointly held peace march in the township to reinforce the the bonding between them. Led by Raina, several civil society members of the majority community joined the procession which passed through the township and culminated at the Jama Masjid Shopian.
