Even as the Centre has given a free hand to security forces to continue their operations to reclaim lost territories in the Valley and establish rule of law, it has also decided to rein in BJP motormouths in the state to ease pressure on the Mehbooba Mufti-led coalition state government.

A BJP source said in the closed door meeting with party leaders and ministers in the government during his recent visit to Jammu, party president Amit Shah came down heavily on certain elements for their uncalled utterances that were adding to the fuel to the fire in the troubled state.

The relations between PDP and BJP had hit a low last month after J&K Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga reportedly compared stone pelting youth with traitors who should be treated with bullets and or should at least be punished by a beating with canes.

Around the same time, activists allegedly belonging to saffron outfits like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal had attacked three nomadic Bakarwal families on suspicion of being cattle smugglers creating a lot of anger in the valley leading to increase in the incidents of stone pelting.

Sources said Shah told them in unequivocal terms that they should understand PDP’s core constituency and should know that their utterances are creating problems not only in J&K, but across the country.

Shah’s meeting came in the backdrop of hectic parleys on the Kashmir situation at the Centre, which also included Governor NN Vohra’s back-to-back meetings with top security establishments, including Prime Minister Modi.
