J&K police foils terror attack, kill two militants

Jammu and Kashmir police foiled a major terror attack when they intercepted a vehicle and killed two top militants including a highly qualified lecturer at Amargarh village in Sopore. However, top counter insurgency officer of Jammu and Kashmir police and his colleague suffered injuries in the operation.

Jammu and Kashmir police foiled a major terror attack when they intercepted a vehicle and killed two top militants including a highly qualified lecturer at Amargarh village in Sopore. However, top counter insurgency officer of Jammu and Kashmir police and his colleague suffered injuries in the operation.

Police said acting on the specific information about militants traveling in a vehicle, police and security forces immediately swung into action and intercepted them near Amargarh, Sopore.

Police said, terrorists lobbed a grenade and fired upon police party in which Superintendent of Police (operations) Baramulla Shafqat Hussain and Sub Inspector Mohammad Murtaza were injured.

In retaliatory action two militants were killed whose identity is being ascertained. Two AK series rifles, one pistol, 4 hand grenades and other arms and ammunition was recovered from the encounter site, police said

The slain militants were identified as Mohammad Azaharuddin alias Ghazi Umar and Sajad Ahmed alias Babar of Hizbul Mujhadeen. Both of them were active in north Kashmir for the last one year. Police said Azharuddin was a government lecturer in Arabic before he quit his job and joined Hizbul Mujhadeen.  

Sajad had gone to Pakistan on valid travel documents through Wagah border for arms training in March 2016. After he returned, he took the command of Hizbul Mujahedeen in Sopore.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, North Kashmir range Nitish Kumar said the duo was going to Srinagar to carry out terrorist attack. “They were involved in several militancy related cases and were active for the last one year,” he said.

Hizb-ul-Mujahideen termed the death of two militants as big loss to the outfit. .“Both were local militants who had been affiliated with the outfit for quite some time. Azaharuddin alias Ghazi Umar was a lecturer by profession who had abdicated the government service and joined Hizb-ul-Mujahideen,” said Burhan-ud-din, Hizbul operational spokesman.
