J&K govt orders re-verification of SPOs engaged in last six years

Weeks after a Special Police Officer decamped with a rifle to become militant in Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday ordered a fresh screening of the SPOs engaged in the last six years.

Special Police Officers are the casual employees of the Police department who work on monthly consolidated salary of Rs 5000 to Rs 6000.

Jammu and Kashmir government on Sunday ordered forming a district-Level Official Committees for screening the SPOs engaged during the past six years.

According to an order issued by the Home Department, each Committee will be headed by the concerned Deputy Commissioner with concerned district SSP and Dy Superintendent of Police (CID-SB) as members.

“These Committees shall assess and screen the SPOs engaged during the past six years, with regard to their selection, antecedents and performance,” the order said adding that the Committees shall submit their report to the Home Department and the Director General Police within one month.

Figures reveal that there are 31,474 SPOs in the Jammu and Kashmir. For the last two years 10,758 SPOs have been engaged in J&K. of whom 8992 SPOs were engaged in Kashmir zone, 1,457 were appointed in Jammu zone.

The highest number of 1,392 SPOs was engaged in Kupwara followed by 1,377 in Baramulla district and 1,275 in Srinagar district. Nearly 2,556 SPOS were engaged in the four south Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama in the last two years.
