Jammu and Kashmir government has gone into an overdrive and booked a cinema hall in Kathua district for three days to screen the Aamir Khan-starrer biopic of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, for hundreds of poor girl students in a bid to empower, educate and motivate them to achieve big in their lives.
Bordering Punjab, Kathua district has one of the lowest sex ratios in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the 2011 census, the female sex ratio (females per 1000 males) has fallen to 890 in 2011 from 898 in 2001 in the district. Child sex ratio (0-6 years) in the district has remained static at 831 in 2001 and 2011 against the national average of 919.
“Showcasing such inspirational movies can create a positive impact in the minds of young girl students. The initiative was taken to motivate girls by showing them feats of inspirational women who have carved a niche for themselves. More steps will be taken to provide exposure to the girls”, said Ramesh Kumar, district development commissioner, Kathua.
The district administration has booked the cinema hall with 200 seating capacity for three days to screen the movie for the poor girl students of government schools to motivate them to beat odds.
“The movie is a success story of Geeta and Babita Phogat. Geeta won the Commonwealth Games gold in wrestling. I want to show this movie to my girls in district to encourage them,” said Kumar.
Under this initiative, the girls are being ferried from different schools to the cinema hall for screening of the movie. The cinema will be exclusively available for the girl students.
“We have arranged transport for the girls. We are providing refreshments during the movie also.
Initially we are targeting 800 to 1000 girls for this programme. Later on we will decide whether we shall continue it or not”, said Kumar.
The government is hoping that such initiatives will help empower twomen and bring positive change in the society as a whole. “Since I joined last year we have improved the sex ratio by six to seven points. We have launched a massive campaign for women empowerment in the district”, said Kumar.
