Crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Saturday when five rebels boycotted the North Kashmir leaders meeting which was chaired by party president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Among the leaders who did not join the meeting include MLA from Baramulla, Javaid Baig, MLA from Pattan Imran Reza Ansari, MLA representing Gulmarg Mohommad Abbas Wani and MLC Yasir Reshi.

Javaid Baig, Imran Reza Ansari and Yasir Reshi were among five PDP rebels --three MLAs and two MLCs--who held news conference on July 13 claiming that they were the `real PDP’ and they have lost confidence in the leadership of Mehbooba Mufti.

The meeting was convened to discuss party affairs in the North Kashmir region. Sources said the legislators gave their suggestion to strengthen the party at the grassroots level and chalk out the future course of action after the rebellion.

In the meeting, Mehbooba impressed upon the leaders to connect with the grassroots workers and ensure close liaison with the general public.

Sources said the meetings are part of the series to reach out to the people and stem the rot in the PDP.  Insiders said PDP is also trying to galvanize the party before the foundation day on July 28 which they want to use to display their show of strength post-revolt in the party.

The meeting comes a day after Mehbooba made startling claims that he pressure is being mounted on PDP MLAs to leave the party and those lawmakers who reject the financial allurements and ministerial berths, are being threatened of NIA raids.
