Even as security forces are busy battling militants, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti called for dialogue between India and Pakistan to end bloodshed in the restive state. “Dialogue with Pakistan is necessary if we are to end bloodshed. I know I will be labeled anti-national by news anchors tonight but that doesn’t matter. The people of J&K are suffering. We have to talk because war is not an option”, Mehbooba tweeted after speaking separately in the two Houses of State Legislature

The chief minister said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been caught in the web of violence for the past 30 years or so and it was out of this pain and suffering that they have been demanding dialogue and better relations between India and Pakistan.

“For how long shall people continue to die and for how long shall we be laying wreaths? Not wars but reach-outs hold the key to peace and friendship”, she said.

Mehbooba said the people of the state have been the worst victims of continued violence and uncertainty, and dialogue is the best way to resolve issues and end this acrimonious situation. Referring to the recent attack on Sunjwan Army camp and continued shelling on the borders, Mehbooba said violence and wars in the past have only led to miseries.

Five soldiers and father of one trooper was killed and 10 injured when Jaish-e-Mohammad fidayeens stormed the highly fortified 36 Brigade headquarters of Army at Sunjwan in Jammu on Saturday. Three fidayeens were also neutralized. More than 21 people have been killed in Pakistani shelling on the Line of Control (LoC) and International border (IB) across Jammu division since January 17.

“It is the earnest desire of the people of the state to see an end to this so that they can live in an atmosphere of peace and amity”, Mehbooba said.
