Frustrated with her state of poverty, Gayitri Devi, who is from Karamtoli under Lalpur Police Jurisdiction of the Jharkhand's capital Ranchi, sold her eight-month-old daughterfor Rs 14,000.

The child was sold to Neetu Gupta of Kishoreganj Choona Bhatta, Ranchi. When Sudhir Nath, Gayitri Devi's husband found out, he lodged a complaint with the police. The Jharkhand police recovered the baby and brought Neetu Gupta and her sister Kanchan, who played a broker in this deal, to the women cell. A child welfare officer visited the police station and took the kid under protection.

Sudhir, a daily wage labourer, who often went out of town for work was shocked to find out that his wife had sold one of their two daughters. His wife Gayitri used to work as a maid. According to the Sudhir's statements in the local media, his low income was often a cause for frustration and sometimes, the couple even found it difficult to pay rent. In a local Hindi daily, "Ashu suggested my wife to give one of her daughters to Neetu in exchange for money. When I was informed about it, I protested and lodged a complaint with the police."

The deal took place on July 14th in the Nakshatra Van Park. Stating the details, Gayitri told the police that she got to know Neetu through her sister Kanchan.  According to the facts that have surfaced so far, Neetu had no kids and she was interested in adopting. After all the negotitaions, Neetu's mother-in-law Nirmala Devi reached Nakshatra Van and gave Gayitiri Rs 14,000 in excahnge for the baby.

Neetu meanwhile disagrees with the this version of events and claims that she had adopted Gayitri's kid. Furthermore, the Rs 14,000 her mother-in-law paid Gayitri was a gift. As of now, city superintendent of police Jaya Rai has informed the press that Neetu and Kanchan have been arrested and the investigation is in process.
