The counting of votes for the Jharkhand Municipal Corporation Elections 2018 is currently underway. The result of elections for the 5 Nagar Nigam will be declared soon.  The counting of votes for five Municipal Corporations in Jharkhand began at 8 AM and the final results are expected to be out by late afternoon.Early trends show an edge for the BJP which rules the state. 

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress both are confident of performing well in the urban body polls. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is also confident of doing good in the polls. 

According to Jharkhand State Election Commission, 278 candidates were in the fray for 34 Mayor and chairman of the municipal bodies seats. 320 candidates are contesting for the post of Deputy Mayor and Vice-chairman, 122 for Mayoral and presidential posts and 23 candidates for Deputy Mayor and vice president posts.

The Nagar Nigams that went to polls are: Modinagar, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Ranchi and Adityapur. Bypolls were also held at four local bodies – Jhumri Tilaiya, Deoghar, Dhanbad and Bishrampur.

While all three major parties are contesting the polls, there are many independent and smaller parties in the fray as well. 

The voting for the municipal bodies took place on Monday, April 16, from 7 am to 5 pm. 

A total voter turnout of 65.15%  was recorded in the state. Ranchi Municipal Corporation, which is the state’s largest urban local body, recorded the lowest turnout of 49.3%. 

RMC election candidates had said that they will approach the State Election Commission with complaints of errors and names missing from voter lists on polling day.
